Exclusive Interview – Dr. Stephen Harris Speaks Out on In-Health Chiropractic
So you’ve finally decided you’ve had enough of those pesky aches and niggles and a visit to a chiropractor is on the cards. But how do you know which one is right for you? After all, every company claims to be “the best” at what they do. But when it comes to your health, you need to be sure you’re in the very best hands; to know exactly what your chiropractor can offer that no other can. And there’s only one way to find out; by asking!
In this revealing interview, Dr. Stephen Harris, founder of In-Health Chiropractic in Pencoed, Bridgend discloses the “nuts and bolts” about his renowned treatment that is helping people from all walks of life to overcome their health problems.
Interviewer: What inspired you to set up the business?
Steve: After I graduated in 2002, I began work for a chiropractor in Newport (South Wales) but his methods of practice just didn’t sit right with me. Quite often, clients would be offered standard treatment “packages” instead of individual care and attention, and I felt like this particular chiropractor was more concerned with bringing in business rather than providing healthcare. So I decided to go out on my own; to offer the kind of thorough, bespoke, and personal treatment that every patient deserves. I wanted to be able to treat people in the way I would want to be treated. With the help of my parents, In-Health Chiropractic was born!
Interviewer: What makes you the experts in your field?
Steve: Our knowledge base, without a doubt! After college, many chiropractors simply put their books on the shelf to gather dust. But here, we live in our own little boxes! Both myself and Glen, teach at the local university which keeps us consistently on the top of our professions. It really is surprising how quickly the human body evolves. In just 15 years since I graduated, new exercises have come out and even names of certain ligaments and tendons have changed! Tests have been modified to make them more accurate, yet chiropractors who do not stay ahead of the game wouldn’t necessarily be aware of this. It’s about constantly fine-tuning and tweaking to always stay one step ahead.
Interviewer: How does your approach differ to your competitors?
Steve: Our biggest USP (unique selling point) – on top of our knowledge base – is the amount of time and effort we put in to helping each and every one of our clients. It sounds very cliché but we genuinely care; and we prove this through our actions. Quite a few chiropractors work business hours only, but pain doesn’t go away after 5pm or at the weekends! That’s why we are prepared to open earlier and close later to suit the needs of our clients. We will even come out during the weekends if necessary. Not too long ago, a client of mine text me on my personal number for emergency treatment early on Sunday morning. I got to him at 9am and saw him again on the Monday. Because he only needed ten minutes of treatment on the Sunday, I didn’t charge him for the first appointment. We do the things that others are not prepared to do; we genuinely go that extra mile.
Interviewer: What kinds of problems do you usually treat?
Steve: A lot more than back pain! Contrary to what many people believe, chiropractors treat more than sore or achy backs! In fact, about almost half of the clients we treat have neck or shoulder issues. Because we talk to our customers and listen to their problems, we have a thorough understanding of our client base. And we believe that we are able to make better diagnostic decisions as a result.
Interviewer: Is there anything you can’t promise your patients?
Steve: We can’t guarantee that every client will make a full recovery, but we can give them the very best chance possible. And if we can’t treat them, we will get them to the right person that can!
